I have the most beautiful friends of Interstitial Cystitis EVER! They each are individual hero's to me as we survive this challenging, frustrating, never ending, frigtening, painful disease. There is no cure. We hope and pray for a cure every day. I thank my family and friends for your unconditional love and support. Courage is Quiet Sometimes

A song that keeps me going...

COURAGE IS QUIET SOMETIMES
Only heaven knows
The pain that her heart holds
A picture perfect smile
Never let's the sorrow show
All alone in the night
That's when she cries
Courage is quiet sometimes
She is searching for the peace
The strength that she needs
Just to look into the mirror
And love who she sees
She knows she's precious in God's sight
And she's holding to Him tight
Courage is quiet sometimes
Why did the world have to tell her
She wasn't beautiful enough
No one should ever have to hunger
For their own selfworth and love
But she is turning to The Father
And like the daughter He's proud of
She's learning how to shine
Courage is quiet sometimes
It seems the greatest lives
are rarely recognized
The daily victories
aren't written in headlines
There are Heros at our side
Tho in humble strength they hide
Courage is quiet sometimes
Why did the world have to tell her
She wasn't beautiful enough
No one should ever have to hunger
For their own selfworth and love
But she is turning to The Father
And like the daughter He's proud of
She's learning how to shine
Courage is quiet

Scared

3/26/10
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were good days because I was busy with different therapies. I was busy putting my trust in new treatments, chiro--PT accupincture ---new strategies
Friday has been my "I miss everyone" day! Bringing tears to my eyes because I miss everyone so very much! No doctor appts on Fridays. Im scared for all the cost of these appts. and therapies, and me on leave without pay. I try to take my mind off the dollars, but then the mail comes and I get that bad feeling in my tummy! $273,86 for the University Pudendal Nerve "Specialist" who spent 7 minutes with me, hurt me during his physical exam, and referred me to AZ, NY, or France! Without ever touching my hand or shoulder comforting me from the terrible FLARE he had just caused, leaving me sobbing under the cloth that covered my pain. Everyday I have another medication to fill. Some of my meds are so rarely given, they are unable to have them readily in stock. My co payments for the therapies are going up to higher percents that I have to pay on my own, as I am exceeding the insurance allowances.and.....I still have all this CRAZY pain. I just wish this was a nightmare and that I would wake up and find me again! I know it takes time to get better, but I also know it comes with a price tag! And I've been paying the price for almost 2 year's now, and things have only gotten worse. That scares me. I have a rare disease, so I am their "little science experiment!". Sorry to say that, but all their weird treatments are just things they are hoping will work. I don't want to live with this pain for the next 30 years! I am running on exhaustion! I'm so very happy I have my family and friends love and their support is where I hold onto through this journey. I'm scared. I'm not sure how I will be able to keep everyone's support. My challenges are becoming a burden on everyone. It's been very challenging and draining on all of us. I love them and I hope they know just how much!I am feeling all alone at this hour 1:50 AM In the morning. I'm hungry. I ate cereal for breakfast lunch and dinner. I don't feel good!I pray tomorrow will be a better day for all of us!

Cycle of acceptance

Shock Stage
The first reaction on hearing the bad news is one of classic shock. This initially may appear as if there is no reaction at all to the news. The person may nod and accept the news without appearing to be troubled by it. Inside, they have frozen out the news that has not really taken hold yet. This is followed by a more external shock, where there may be physical reactions such as paling of the skin, shortness of breath and physical freezing.

Denial Stage (I am Here!)
After the initial shock has worn off, the next stage is usually one of classic denial, where they pretend that the news has not been given. They begin to pretend that nothing has happened.A classic behavior here is a 'flight into health', where previously- perceived problems are suddenly seen as having miraculously fixed themselves.

Anger StageThe next step after denial is a sudden swing into anger, which often occurs in an explosion of emotion, where the feelings of the previous stages are exploded into a flood of grief. Whoever is in the way is likely to be blamed. The phrase 'Why me?' may be repeated in an endless loop in their heads. A part of this anger thus is 'Why not you?', which fuels their anger at the those who are not affected, or perhaps not as seriously so.

Bargaining StageAfter the anger has dissipated, the next stage is a desperate round of bargaining, seeking ways to avoid having the bad thing happen. Bargaining is hoping that the bad thing that is coming, won't actually happen.Bargaining in illness includes seeking alternative therapies and experimental drugs. In organizations, it includes offering to work for less money (or even none!), offering to do alternative work or be demoted down the hierarchy. One's loyalties, debts and dependants may be thought of as ways of being saved.

Depression StageAfter denial, anger and bargaining, the inevitability of the news eventually sinks in and the person reluctantly accepts that it is going to happen. From the animation of anger and bargaining, they slump into a depression. . In this deep depression, they see only hopelessness, with no end in sight.. In turning in towards themselves, they turn away from any solution and any help that others can give them.Depression may be seen in a number of passive behaviors. The person may shy away from friends and family, they may begin to miss work more frequently, they may stop taking care of themselves physically. Depression can also be seen in some active behaviors such as crying for extended periods of time.

Testing StageEven in the pit of depressive despair, reality eventually starts to bite and the person realizes that they cannot stay in that deep, dark hole forever. They thus start looking for realistic things that they can do. These may be taken on as 'experiments' to see if doing these things help the situation in any way. As this activity starts to work, at least in some ways, it is found to be preferred to the depression and so the person crawls out of that dark hole. This escape is often done with the support of friends, family and professionals who specialize in helping people in whatever situation this is.

Acceptance StageThe final stage is back to one of stability, where the person is ready and actively involved in moving on to the next phase of their lives, no matter how short. The terminally ill person will be putting their life in order, sorting out wills and helping others to accept the inevitability that then now have countenanced and faced. With people whom have chronic pain, like in the case of PN, a person might start making arrangements to find further treatments, like PT, Botox, PN injections etc.Acceptance is typically visible by people taking ownership both for themselves and their actions. They start to do things and take note of the results, and then changing their actions in response. They will appear increasingly happier and more content as they find their way forward.

Will I Ever Find Me?

Ok.
Not ok.
I'm losing "me."
If you have seen me, please tell me to come home.
Am I missed?
Do people know where I am?
I'm finished with doctors, and medicines!
I've got to find hope somewhere else...
Please give me STD... I need time to get control of this beastly disease.
Don't worry, I'm smiling through this Flare.
Not.

Throwing in The Towel: STD

I'm exhausted, and I'm throwing in the towel in HOPES of qualifying for Short Term Disability. I NEVER thought I would EVER wear that tag! I can only say IC and PNE is kickin my butt! I just need a few weeks away from the stress in teaching to give all these therapies a chance to work! My PT gives me a couple of new exercises every week! It takes alot of energy and focus to do them several times a day.My sweet daughters, and hubby have been taught how to do bladder instills and internal trigger releases! They are fabulous! Not the treatments! My family! So, I hope with all my heart I will qualify. I'm finding ways to help manage my pain. Taking time off has helped. I am sooooo going to get back into the classroom for the end of the year, and I'm shooting to be the "comeback kid" next fall! Wish me luck!
I pray for you my IC Sisters!
Please have some feel good moments whenever you can!
Take time for YOU!HUGGLES!

Insurance Grrrrr...

INSURANCE!
I have ALTIUS through the school district ... I can pay anywhere between $450 - $600 a month out of pocket. Co pays for specialists are $35.00 each and all ic docs are "specialists." I have PT two times a week so that's a little more than $280.00 a month. I have cranial sacral treatments each week not covered by insurance a little more than $140.00 a month. Surgeries (hydro) every 2-3 months with doc and anethesiologysts about $212.00 my cost each time. My medication copays run between $15 and $45 a month.
A new med i just started, URELLE realllllly helps but is not covered by my insurance and the cost for it is $220.00 per month. I am almost at the end of my first month and HOPE i canfight hard enough to get my insurance to cover more of the cost. I use to go into the URO for instills 1-2 times a week at $35.00 a visit, but now I purchase my own supplies.... I don't even know all the costs for that... Cathetors and such.

I SPEND LOADS of mine out of pocket for my IC.I agree with everyone that insurance, and all medical companies are in the business yo make money... Not help people. I work to pay for what my insurance won't pay, taking many days a month off without pay because I've used up my sick and vacation leave. I work many days very sick. I wish I could change my life but I don't know where to begin!!!I'm just hoping my IC goes into remission soon and stays that way for the rest of my life!!!

Short Term Disability

.....Yay ME!!!!
NOT.

I am applying for short term disability through my school district! Just working on the paperwork, hoping to teach 1/2 kindergarten for the last 8 weeks of school. I am happy because it will give me some time each afternoon to take care of ME!!! But, sheesh... Im gonna miss my babies!!!!
My passion is these kids! Hoping my paperwork passes "inspection!". The ladies ive been talking with say everything looks like it's a "GO" because i tried for catastrophic leave in January, would have qualified but i didnt have a day to "give" to the leave bank!

Sheesh AGAIN!!! Ive given a day to the leave bank every year for the past 16 yrs!!! My principal tried VERY HARD to get me the leave. And, dah, I didnt even think about short term!!! Ive paid into that for 16 yrs, and for some ding dong reason, i thought IC & PNE would not qualify.... But the ladies said, "oh yeah!"
One BIG QUESTION.... why didnt they tell me that in January? Dang! Diddledog-Gine!!! I could have had time to do all the home therapy my PT has assigned me over the past 10 weeks!!!
Financially, i will need to teach 4 hrs in the AM. And (yes...this is a squeel!!!!!!!) eeeeeeee.... I wont have to leave sub plans in the PM. The afternoon person will be certifief and can do her own lessons!!! Oh happy day!!My daughter has been volunteering almost EVERYDAY in my classroom over the past 6 1/2 months! Ive made a "bed" on the floor in my 5x4 walk in closet and have spent many painful hours giving teaching directions to my daughter through the door. YES i have a tiny frige and microwave, and yes i have rice bags and ice bags and i USE THEM! SHEESH...again! My kindergarten babies are the sweetest kids EVER!!! Theyve all wanted ti help me feel better!!! (yes, i am crying here!). They each have an important job to do to keep our learning cimmunity progressing.

I Feel Lost

I hope this pain doesnt last forever...that there will be a cure, or a way for me to get the relief i need soon. I'm at the point where teaching is almost impossibe, and sadly Im looking at short or long term leave from teaching. I've missed a lot of teaching days for theapy and doc visits. I'm out of leave and have taken many MANY hours without pay. It is so hard for me to even think of leaving my special kindergarten kids! But, tomorrow I am going to the district to ask for qualification paperwork for extended leave.
It hurts my heart soooooooooooooooooo much. I've taught so many days in pain, not taking pain meds because I am responsible for these little spirits. I've seen childlike love in their eyes as they have comforted me with back rubs, pillows, heated rice bags, letters, cards, ice packs...tender hugs and loves.
I've told them I know Heavenly Father sent each one of them here to be together in my kindergarten class. I've told them, and shown them the ways to be compassionate and empathetic toward all good people. I don't know if my heart can go on without seeing them every day. I miss them already, and I don't even know if I'll qualify for leave. I know my body may be unable to go on right now, but my heart won't let go. I've had a hard time expressing that to my principal, friends, and students.
My principal thinks it would be best if I just take a 30 day leave without telling the kids, and then returning for the last 2 weeks of school. I hope their heart understands... I hope my heart makes it. I know it is what's best for my health for now. I just worry so much about those little hearts, but I know Heavenly Father will show us the way. He's been with me all along and I know He will not leave me comfortless!I've had several therapists working together, I've met some of the sweetest caregivers, and some who are not so caring! Many of them are truely angels----they just have to be angels from Heaven blessing me in this journey. I feel Heavenly Father's love all around me.I have met hundred's of women via face book who suffer as I do. They are fabulous and couragious women! Many of them suffer this journey alone without the support of family and friends. I message many IC & PNE sisters all over the world. Although some of my posts sound like I am compaining with pain, I am in pain, but I'm sending out "bait" to find those who suffer this same journey. And to my surprise there are thousands of us on face book, more each day. We don't know what is causing the breakdown in our bladder inner lining...possibly something enviromently. It's absolutely frightening that this disease is running rampid through so many bladders, just as breast cancer started so many years ago. Medical Science has been caught off guard with this autoimmune disease. YES I hurt, I work in pain tirelessly, and come home exhausted. I love you all so much, and I won't stop until I am whole and healthy! I know I will get there. Thank you Chrissy for the techniques you've learned that I'm sure we will use in the future. The chiro told me some ne things that will be painful but if you help me I can make it, I can do it! Right now things are very painful but it won't last forever, I promise. I have to have that kind of faith to help me navagate this journey.

3/22/10 District meet with Nayola@ DistrictNeed to apply for Family Medical Leave.... Sharon and Dave went with me. They were my voice and my recorder as I was in TERRIBLE PAIN. I have to take 10 days without pay! Then 30 calendar days without pay. I have to pay my insurance premiums and flex spending dollars. I feel SICK!!! I KNOW I pushed the button donating to the catasrophic leave bank. I always do!But here I am, PNE & IC taking over my life. I hurt. I can't think!
I've lost me!I've lost my voice.
Ive lost all my favorite foods
Ive lost the energy to shop.
Ive lost the desire to cook & clean.
Ive lost the ENERGY to park & shop.
Ive lost the ability to sit in church.
Ive lost my mind.
Ive lost my favorite clothes.
Ive lost TIME with my grandKids
Ive lost sitting; car, plane, boat, watching tv, movies, restaraunts, SCRAPPING & crafting, vacations.
I've lost my hobbies.
Ive lost time with my hubby.
Ive lost my career's passion teaching.
Ive lost money.
it continues.... Treatment after treament drug after drug.
Ive lost all sick leave.
I've lost all vacation leave.
Im giving up my classroom, kids, materials I've created over the years to a "long term sub!" I've spent much of the day planning the rest of the year for someone else to carry on without me. Ive lost time teaching Tage.
And seeing Kyle's family at the end if the school day. School was my safe place to see them.
Ive lost energy, joy...
I've lost trust in doctors & therapists. I know they TRY, but the bottom line is they don't know how to help me, I'm not even sure they understand or believe me!
IVE LOST ME
I havent lost my FAITH, but I still..,want to run as far & fast as i can away from this gnawing, nagging twisting, hot aching PAIN.

After Dr. Sharp

Note to A Friend
This is a face book post i sent to a fb friend after my appt with dr sharp

You are so sweet!!! I've written a lot on the thread. I know your warm love and thoughts have helped me through one of the hardest week's of my life. I am really working on getting out over this FLARE.

The Womens Pelvic Pain specialist touched me INSIDE on NERVES that did NOT want to be touched. I was in the worst pain, sobbing on the ex table as he talked to my hubby about trippling my neuronten and adding anti-depressent. He said i was depressed!!! I am NOT DEPRESSED i am in pain!!!

Why do doctors think pain is in our head???? He touched the nerves, dx me with Pudendal Nerve Entrapment. He saw my pain he read the 13 page paoerwork i filled out about my body and the life i don't have.

He said there was no one in our state who could help my nerve pain, referring me to docs in AZ, NY, or France!!! I can't sit in a car right now, how can i fly, ride in a taxi, sit in more waiting rooms, fill out more doctor forms, stay in hotels, and have the $ to do all this, along with who knows how many follow up trips?

Hubby asked about something for pain, doc just said matter of factly, "We don't like to give pain meds as they are addictive.". I could have jumped off that table and bit his nose off if i weren't naked. I was furious! FURIOUS!! I've never felt like that before! He is the one who is making me feel so hopelesd today!HOPELESS is not what a good doc does for his patient. I wish i had slapped him, i'd be the big bad patient, but maybe he would be more compassionate the next time. He did not touch my hand, shoulder, or even say he was sorry for hurting me as i lay sobbing under the cloth on the exam table

The terrible thing is he came highly recommended by all the medical people i have seen over the past year. I had to wait almost a month to get an appt.
Why is it that drug addicts can get pain meds but the people who are REALLY in PAIN can not?My URO has prescribed pain meds in low low doses, and i take one when i get so bad i can't breathe. Like i'd get addicted to them because i like the "rush!" What rush, all i feel is 70% pain relief, for which i am so grateful!!!! . Who do they market these medications to, themselves? It really makes me wonder.
i am sorry for going on and on here! I guess i was just typing like i was talking to my journal or diary when i was 16 yrs old! LOL

How are you doing? I am a great listener with a big compassionate heart!!! Although the journaling above might put me in a psycho unit! I reallllllllllly am a patient, kind and giving person. If you ever feel like venting... Vent away!!!! Hugs!THANKS FOR getting to this part of the post if you had the patience to make it hereLOL X 10000000

Asking for Help

I can't teach like I use to. I've been in my classroom closet laying on a little bed I made for myself, texting my volunteer daughter as she is teaching my class. I feel so bad about the kind of teacher I have become.
I am admitting I need some help...
So... I emailed the Math Specialist and the Reading Specialist and asked them to come in and teach 2 days a week. That should give me some time to work through my pain. I don't have any leave, and affording to take time without pain is kept for traveling to and participating in doctor visits and therapies. I don't like this at all. Here is the Email I sent. Both of them graciously volunteered to help me.

School help plz
have been sooooo sick with this nerve pain, and ive missed sooooo many teaching oportunitiesI would really love to meet with you on monday from 2:25/2:50 to work some plans. I have a rare nerve condition which is very debilitating and painfull. I am at the end of my rope here The nerve specialists at the u of u hospital have referred me to drs. In AZ. NY. or France. I cant stop teaching as this is my insurance. Im just trying my best to make it through to the end of the year. Many days i lay in my closet on blankets as annie or mindy try to teach my class. It is becoming a major stress on everyone. If we could meet and make some plans for you to come every week for a few days that would be such a blessing. I may be lying down while you are hereThis disease is so painful and is just getting worse as i am on my feet too much. Stress also makes the paim worse I am unable to sit. It is too painful. Let me know what you think. Thank you so very much. I LOve MY JOB and my kids..,.But i am so exhausted right now i could use any relief i can get.....
Thank you thank you thank you.

Olive Oil Therapy

For my friend: Marion
OLIVE OIL
Marion thank you sweetie! I send my live to you and pray for you. I know through our IC family we will help each other. One way or anither we will find someone who helps you and we will raise the money to get you where the doctor is. I feel your pain. Please find the inner parts of your body that work and use olive in a warm bath to massage the areas and tell those parts how much you live what good they do for you. Rub your chest with olive oil on your hands in a hot bath, telling your heart how grateful you are for it beating each day. How grateful you are for the people like your IC family who live you. Do this for all your organs. I do mine at night by candle light no lights on with soft music playing. I even rub the organs that hurt and tell them i need them. I cry good tears, focusing on joy and healing in my mind. Sometimes i just sob like a baby. Christ used oil to heal, oil from the olive tree. We are not Jesus, but i think he was teaching us to use the oil, our hands, and love to heal. I knoe it sounds weird, but it has brought me so MUCH NEEDED COMFORT. It takes time for tour body to heal. I believe i have lived my bladder into healing, where western medacine cant go. I am dealing with the terrible pudendal nerve pain caused by IC pain. I have faith this will soon be a thing of the past. I love you Marion, begin tonight in a warm bath, NO SOAP, just olive oil. I scent mine with a muscle pure oil i got from my cranial therapist-she too has done amazing things to heal and teaches me so much about loving me. It was so ver hard in the beginning to not focus in the pain... But ive been doing this for more than a month EVERYNIGHT! I take my time to live me like i loved myself when i was a little girl. Ive hated myself for so long. No more! I still take my 3 minute shower in the am to clean my hair and use gentle soap to clean the iutside if me. I think our life has taught us ti quickly shower and run thr0ugh our day.
We dont take time for lovin, realling LOVING ME from the inside.
It takes time.
I hope you find some healing.
Keep your faith strong. I love you!

Voiding Diary

I use to go PEE every 10 minutes day and night. I was like this for months and months being treated for UTIs several times w/o bacteria. Once diagnosed with IC I HAVE instills and take Elmiron now for almost 6 months. Seems to be helping. I take Urelle and that seems to have helped with spasms! Yeah! VERY EXPENSIVE!! I had a hard time having bowel movements... Still do but it has improved "some."I have had 7 PT treatments and 3 Cranial Sacral massages at &35 each.

Having IC has changed my life dramatically.

I am in pain every day. My energy level is gone and I am tired all the time. I believe I have pinched nerves as I am unable to sit for longer than 3-4 minutes due to leg goin perinial anal pain.Riding in a car is very painful. I ride lying down in the backseat with an ice pack on by crotch. And heat packs on my lower back and hips.I use heat and cold packs ALOT.I take warm olive oil massage baths almost daily.

I work full time as a Kindergarten Teacher, and my days are painful and my head is in a cloud most of the day.I feel lost.I feel hopeless.

IC does not go away.
I feel lonely.
I hurt.
I miss many foods, nothing tastes good.I can't do the things I use to do.
I hurt or I have no energy. Want quality time with grandkids hubby adult children ailing mother non understanding father and other family and friends. I want time to enjoy teaching.
I want people to know there is a person whose life is unorganized confused and painful behind the scientific diagnosis of INTERSTIAL CYSTITIS.
I DONT LIKE WHO I AM.
I CRY *alot!*this horrible silent disease. Silent: But, how can you be in pain, you look fine to me?I will write a book: "IC: The Person Behind the 7 Minute Dr. VisitDr. 's don't have time to know how living with IC is living a DAILY confused anxiety life of pain and hopelessness.

I don't like keeping a voiding diary. I shouldn't have to. But I will.

I give up. I've been using note pad on my phone to keep these records. It is exhausting. I've shared the notes with a doctor. She didn't even blink at the phone and the record I've kept, even though she asked me to keep a voiding diary. What's the point? To make me feel more weird?

IC: The Person Behind the 7 Minute Doctor Visit

Ive been gathering posts, stories, and journaling for the past 8 months since I was diagnosed. I've been planning on writing a book using real peoples lives with IC and all that goes with it. The title of my book will be

"IC: The Person Behind the 7 Minute Dr. Visit.

More and more people are becoming aware of IC and "some" of it's CRAZY symptoms, but people don't realize the life changes an IC diagnosis hands over to the unprepared and uninformed patient. How we live day to day... The fear of the unknown, treatments that are still in their trial stages... Diet, emotions, 24 hr pain that makes you want to pull your hair out in chunks! Shattered relationships. Unable to make plans because you don't know frominute to minute how you are going to feel... Unable to sit or ride in a car without terrible nerve and urgency pain... Deciding what to wear because everything hurts "down there"...no sleep... Exhaustion... Hearing people say: " oh, cystitis, I get that burning sometimes too..." NO THEY DONT HAVE IC!!!! ... the Many many dr and ER VISITS ... Treated for UTI when there is NO bacteria but your symptoms feel like the WORST UTI you've ever had.... And the bladder instills you learn to give yourself to get even a day of
relief. All the restrctions.... Stay away from stress and So Many trigger foods .... And the urethral, vaginal, rectal, peinial PAIN... sleeping with ice packs between your legs, taking long hot baths or showers. ... Drinking baking soda water several times a day. Giving up all drinks except water (only bottled) and milk. You look great, so people don't see how sick you really are. It's an effort to shop with all the bathroom trips having to leave your shopping cart several times hoping it won't be restocked before you get back to it. Finding the shortest check out line racing to put groceries in your car and racing back into the store for your 6th bathroom break. Sitting for 5 minutes of pain and urgency on every dirty toilet in your town ..consntrating til you finally get that little trickle out, and beating yourself up because that's all you had. Then you stand up and before you dry your raw washed hands off you need to go again but you race to your
car so you can get your groceries home. Your groceries wait in the car because you have to potty first. Working with IC is a whole other story. I teach kindergarten and I give every bit of energy to my teaching day and have nothing left for my family or myself. I don't sit at all too painful in my girly areas, groin, thighs .. I work for the insurance and many of my meds aren't covered and the treatments are expensive as each requires a $35 or more copayment. I do PT 2 times a week taking leave without pay because I've used all my vacation and sick leave because of IC. My out of pocket IC cost monthly is close to $450 . Each day before I get out of bed I wish the day was over. I have a bag full Of meds that I hate taking because I can't drive or function normally and responsibly on them and I fear addiction or that my body will get use to one drug and I will have to keep begging for something stronger and stronger. Fear of the unknown.. once you have an
autoemmune disease you may get another one. In fact you probably will. They can't remove what is causing the pain, it's not a tumor. You won't die from IC but 2/3 of the time you would like life to be over. There is alot of depression. Anxiety. Tears. Feeling ALONE, no one listens. The pain is compared to that of cancer, but not given the same research or respect, many doctors and husbands still think it's in our head. You have no intimacy life and you feel alone ALOT. You NEED HUS BAD but that just reminds you intimacy will hurt.... BAD for several days... And you will need to schedule a hot bath and ice pack time... Whilevyour partner falls blissfully asleep... You cant tell him you hurt... He takes it personally.

you probably haven't "met" anyone who has IC just lots of IC sisters on the Internet/ face book friends. Just faces and words printed on a screen. They know and share your pain. They don't know it, but one or more of them have literally saved your life with a few words or a vitual hug.

Yeah. I see my URO evey couple of months now for that 7-9 minute doctors visit that always starts out with "so have you been feeling better?" and you want to cry, and you can't waste any of your short time with tears but you just don't know what to say, how to explain the pain that has taken over your body. How to say I lost myself and I want me back. Usually medications are changed and you make an appt for another month or two. Then I go to my backseat car bed, put my ice pack between my legs, and my husband begins the hour drive home that actually takes twice that long due to the necessary bathroom stops you've plotted out as you've found the cleanest bathrooms along the route home. There is silence in the car as you toss the new prescriptions on the empty passenger seat next to my husband, where I am suppose to be riding. I pull the blanket up over my head, I don't want drivers passing by seeing me. And I cry as quietly as I can all the way home. My
husband gets tired of hearing me sob like I use to. Now I sob uncontrolably when he can't hear me. He doesn't know how to help me, his life has changed too. And our future together is uncertain. Communication is hard because of the pain. I pray alot on those drives home from dr. Visits talking myself out of jumping out of the car intonthe fast moving cars. I wonder if we are passing other IC sufferers lying in pain under a blanket in the backseat. The silence hurts, because I should have been able to say "I'm getting better!"

I've always been strong and brave. Now I scare myself, I've learned to wear a painted smile and suffer with this invisible disease. Sometimes I just wish i could sleep forever. FOREVER. my home needs me to get better,,, it needs cleaned by a womans hands. It screams out at me as I lay on my pillows trying to get better. I wish it would stop yelling at me. My hubby does so
Much of what I use to do... Laundry, dishes, managing the finances, and working in his own career.

Will i ever get better?
I will get better.
I will.

I need to clean my bathroom right now, but laying here with my heat packs and ice packs and my pain meds takes all the energy I have for right Now. Trying not to move too much so the wires on my TENS pain relief machine don't short out or come loose.

Typing with one finger on my iPhone is my stress reliever as I lay here. I don't use good grammer I just type how I feel and I don't go back and fix my mistakes,,, takes too Much out of me.
I have had to take 3 uncomfortable painful trips to the bathroom and reheat my home made rice heat bags several times just writing this email.

There is so much more... Like not being able to sit at the movies and enjoy a show, or plan on any kind of vacation or family time. Flying in an airplane is too painful. Last time i sat at the exit door near the wimdow. It was just an hour flight but i had so much pain once again i talked to myself and prayed that ibwouldntboprn the door.
I'm hungry but I have no idea what to eat everything either bothers my IC or the IBs that goes hand in hand andakes everything worse. I feel so much less pain whe I just drink water all day... But taking all these pills on an empty stomach makes me sick, and puking pills up so
Much has burned my asophogus. I can't spell and I don't care. I teach schoolnfull time standing up all day because sitting is so painful.. I want to take my feet off and give them a soft cold place to cool down,.... RIGHT NOW they are on fire.

So, yes... There is a person behind the 7 minute doctor visit, just search IC on FaceBook and read the life stories minute br minute. Second by second. Day after day. Week after week. Month after month. Year after year. Fr doctor visit to pharmacy.

I know people suffer with many diseases and have heard that 1 in every 2 of us have a silent illness. I pray we can all be more patient and tollerant if each other. And as you drive along those busy freeways and highways be patient, the driver may be worrying about his sick wife hidden under the blanket in the backseat in tears.

I will write this book someday when I get feeling better, maybe I have given you a perspective you may not have thought of. When I write my book the proceeds will go to find a cure for IC and every URO. and GYNO will be given a free copy to read so they can really understand IC is not just a scientific word for what is happening to the bladder wall.

Thanks for taking time to read this mess of thoughts and words. Yes I am in a flare almost constantly. I hear it takes months to figure this out and sometimes years, and sometimes youll never figure it out. And each IC person is different and yet there are commonalities. I'm going to beat this! I will, along with all my IC. Sisters.

Sent from my iPhone oh yeah!

The Perfect IC Bathroom.

Seriously.... I had just finished taking pictures of MY bathroom, because I am so thankful for IT... after using the little "kid" bathrooms at the school. They are soooooooo very dirty. Custodian did an "extra" mopping the other day (sweet boy!) , but it just isn't the same as home. Lots of little 5-6 year-olds using that potty every day!!!!! Everytime I go in there I wish I were home.... in my own clean potty.

I can't believe it~! Jill just sent out an article she wrote about the perfect IC bathroom.

"It's my potty, and I'll cry if I want to, cry if I want... You would cry if IC happened to YOU."

This is the Article from Jill (or you could follow the link above):

The Ultimate IC Friendly Bathroom
When I start a New Year, I like to get organized. It’s out with the old and in with the new and that includes my bathroom where, like most IC patients, I spend a considerable amount of time. Having IC is challenging and I want to make sure that I have some small pleasures that will make those restroom moments more bearable. To avoid unnecessary bladder infections, I also need to make sure that my bathroom stays clean. Here are some ideas!

#1 – Towels That Comfort You! We all have thin towels that have seen better days. Once a year, donate your old, ratty towels to your local animal shelter and buy yourself some soft, warm and cozy towels. Keep them clean by washing your towels atleast twice a week. If it’s been sitting, damp on your floor or sink for more than a day, it needs to be washed. To reduce skin irritation, we suggest using Ivory Snow or Dreft as laundry detergents.

#2 – Candles To Please You! If you’re like most IC patients, you probably have a very sensitive sense of small and the smells that bother us the most usually originate from the bathroom. Yet most bathroom sprays are just too strong. Look for a gently scented citrus scented candle like orange or grapefruit for a clean fresh aroma. If you need a spray, try Ozium brand sprays which reduce smells immediately yet don’t linger in the air. Avoid strong scent products, like Glade or Fabreze. These are often very irritating to our sensitive noses.

#3 – Soaps That Don’t Irritate You! With our uber sensitive skin, most mass market soaps are too harsh for our skin. The IC friendliest soaps to use in the shower or bath are Basis for Sensitive Skin or a plain Dove Bar. At your sink, you might find bar soaps too messy. We like to use liquid soaps for our hands, preferably those for sensitive skin. The Rainbow brand is perfect if you can find it.

#4 – Tissues That Please You! There’s nothing worse than needing to use the restroom only to discover no toilet tissue. Yikes!! Buy tissue in bulk and always keep at least two new rolls in your bathroom. You might consider trying unscented, flushable moist wipes from Natracare or Seventh Generation for an extra soothing experience. I need to get some of those moisture wipes.

#5 – Water To Soothe You! If you struggle with “urine burn,” vulvodynia or rectal discomfort, a periwash bottle is a must addition to your toilet routine. Simply fill with water and rinse off your sensitive areas each time you use the facilities. Not only will this calm and soothe your vulva and perineum, it also helps keep bacteria at bay. I need to get one of these!

#6 – Heat To Relax You! One of the most comforting things you can use during an IC flare is a heating pad. Once a year, buy yourself a new electric heating pad (make sure it has a timer or automatic turn off for safety). Consider buying a microwaveable pad with a washable cover as well for those moments when electric won’t work.

#7 – Soda For A Sitz Bath! – Most IC patients have learned quickly that bubble baths and gels can be very irritating. So, what do you put in your bathwater for a comforting soak?? We suggest that you use baking soda (1/2 to 1 cup) for an extra soothing sensation. Some patients like using Aveeno as well! I seriously need to take a look at my soaps... and get a pretty container for that BOX of baking soda....mmmm.... another scrapbooking moment.....when I get feeling better.... I feel horrible today!

#8 – Cleanliness Counts - The cleanliness of your toilet area can help prevent painful bladder infections. Use clean towels for your hands and body and wash these regularly. Dispose of trash. Using a disinfectant wipe, wipe down your sink, toilet seat and toilet rim atleast twice a week. Scrub the inside of your toilet at least once a week with a toilet brush. Wash bathroom floors at least once a week. Look for environmentally sensitive cleansing supplies like those from Seventh Generation.Bathtubs require special attention, especially if they have bubble jets. Follow your manufacturers instructions and clean these tubes regularly as they have been proven to harbor bacteria.

#9 – Remove Clutter – We’ve all seen the old bottles of shaving cream, toothpaste and/or perfume sitting lined up along the sink in your bathroom. They’re so dusty, it’s obvious they haven’t been touched in years. It’s time to clear the clutter on your sink, shelves and drawers! Throw out items past their expiration date. Eliminate as many jars as you can from your sinks and bathtubs. Your goal – a clean sink area that’s pleasing to the eye and nose!

#10 – Dispose of Old Medications – Medications and OTC products that have passed their expiration date should be disposed of promptly. Failure to do so could endanger your life because some medications become unstable and ineffective over time. Once a year, go through your medications, cough drops, shampoos etc. and purge the old, expired items. Some pharmacies accept medications for disposal.

Yes, it might take you a few hours to get your bathroom organized for the New Year, but it’s worth it in the long run! Ideally, we want your bathroom to be a clean and soothing refuge. A lighted candle, a warm shower and cozy towels can work wonders for your spirit.

You deserve it! Enjoy!

Counting My MANY Blessings: First PT Visit

Angels are with me!
I can feel them!
I feel so blessed.
I have the best Husband.
I have the best Sub: (for my k-class) my daughter! (The rest of my family are all amazing also!)
I have the best Boss.
I have the best Friends.
I have the best Urologist.
I have the best Physical Therapist.
I have the best Pharmacist.
I have the best Kindergarten Kids EVER!

I have had an incredable day!
My first Physical Therapy visit... I have met another angel in my journey...
I feel so blessed.

I was absolutely frightened to meet my PT. I'd heard and read some things about pelvic floor dysfunction and physical therapy that weren't on the positive side.

This evening, after having a 2 hour treatment!!!...
I am full of HOPE.
I TRUST MY PT.
YES... I AM YELLING!
She is AMAZzzzING-amazing....
.......................................
This is how the day went for me...
Teaching school was painful, as always.
I wanted to give up on me, give up on life.
I knew I was going to PT, and I was so nervous.
I have felt like nothing is working to rid me of this pelvic PAIN, IC, IBS... and everything that goes with it. **Depression was deep, my emotions on edge**
I was feeling "done with life!"

My husband drove me to my appointment. I can't drive myself. I've been in so much PAIN and riding in a car magnifies that horrific nerve pain so terribly, forcing me to ride lying down in the back seat, with pillow and blanket... an ice pack between my legs. And the pain and urgency is still so intense, that we have to stop a couple of times along the route for me to stand up and take a potty break.
It is just a 45 minute drive to the PT office. I've been doing the 1 hour drive to my Uro for almost 6 months... with all this PAIN!

I prayed the entire time: Please, please give me hope.

I had an anxiety attack in the elevator, and I almost talked myself into not going! I was crying when I walked out of the elevator... down the hall... and up to the reception desk. I was glad my husband was there, he helped check me in.
He explained to the receptionst that I was in a lot of pelvic floor pain, and that we came in hope of getting some relief.
The receptionist said confidently: "Lori will get that for you," as she touched my hand.
Lori is my PT.
She came out to the reception desk, and kindly met us.
She seemed to me to be one of the three kindest health care professionals I've met in this painful journey.

And... that kindess never waivered, not once during those 2 hours.

I had to leave the table on several occassions... to potty... and she was so patient.
She talked soothingly and caringly, expressing exactly how I have been feeling like she'd been sharing every day of the past 2 and 1/2 years with me, and telling me exactly how she was going to get all pain to go away.

She consistantly and kindly assured me that
I will get my life back!

I can't explain it all right now... but the therapy was amazing!
No, I am not "healed," but I have Hope.
I have a PT I trust.
She has promised to give me all she has, and tools to get me relief.
I am feeling amazing tonight, and believe she has given me some things I can do to relieve some of this pain until my next visit.
I will not write any more, I need to "relax, & breathe, " for now.
Yes..... Again....

Pain Scale Charts

I don't know about you.... but sometimes I KNOW how much pain I am in... and sometimes I don't realize how much I am in. Sometimes I "get so use to the pain," I forget to give myself permssion to take care of my pain. So, I went out there on the Information Highway and found several different pain management scales.

I believe these will be helpful in the days ahead on my IC Journey as I visit my URO and she asks me to give a rating of my pain. This should help us both be more clear.
Feel free to copy and print out any of these scales for yourself.

UPDATE to this POSt....Having a level 10 moment here myself.... Red Lobster Scampi has Lemon Juice in it.... What was I thinking? There goes the weekend.... and you know what I mean!

The Spoon Theory

The Spoon Theory
Read this post and then Click on the Picture
by Christine Miserandino http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/

This was sent to me as an Email Message from My IC Friend Connie...

Connie's email:
"Hello I found this great story about a girl that has Lupis and how people can't see her illness but this is how she describes what it feels like from the time she gets up until she has used up all her energy and this story really hit home with me this is how I feel with my IC and maybe it can explain why I sometimes have to cancel plans or can't do everything I would like to do I just run out of spoons. It is a long story but I think will explain what a invisible diesease feels like to us that have one. I hope you enjoy her story I sent this to some of my IC friends so they could send to there family and friends so they would understand also this summs it up pretty well. I know we look like we feel well but if we don't take our medication or do to much we are shot for the day and maybe the next day, and maybe even for the whole darned week. Huggs Connie "

Funny... I'd just found the same story... and was getting ready to email it to Connie! The story really helped me to understand "me" right now... and to stop beating myself up over the choices I have to make each day. I can't do everything I want to do, and that's hard for me, but hey...it's okay... because I know the spoon story... and for now... I'm going to be okay with what I do get accomplished each day... And, somedays I won't accomplish anything... and that's okay too...I'm going to do the best I can each day, and be happy with "me."

Kisses & Hugs to all and to all a goodnight!

After the Holidays

The After Holiday Crash
A mother shares her story:
Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 7:12pm
My daughter Christine has Lupus (I suffer from my own auto immune disease) and she thinks she is invincible. She tries to overcompensate for the times she feels like hell, by being Superwoman, Supermom and Martha Stewart, all rolled into one.

In the weeks preceeding Christmas her home looked like a Winter Wonderland, tastefully decorated with snowmen and snowflakes. She had her precious daughter Olivia's picture taken with Santa and her photo cards were out on time- way before mine. Chris even managed to buy and wrap over 40 gifts and bake about 10 dozen batches of cookies. She definitely had the Spirit of Christmas and her energy level seemed nothing short of a Christmas miracle.

Fast forward two days after Christmas; the presents were all unwrapped, the cookies were now crumbs, the parties and family get togethers were all over and my daughter's house looked like Babies R Us had relocated to her living room. Unfortunately, Christine had hit the wall. Lying among the torn wrapping paper and pile of toy doubles that needed to be returned, I found my daughter crashed on the couch. She was totally depleted- she had spent all her "
spoons" on the holiday and now she was left with none. Chris was upset that she was again sick- that Lupus had flared its ugly head once more.

But I am sure Chris is far from alone. Since Christmas, so many of my friends, the healthy ones, have all been bitten by a strange "bug." They think it's a virus, but I think it's "Holidaydepletion." Everyone, especially women, wear themselves out during the month of December in hopes of creating the perfect holiday of their dreams. And on top of that, I find that many people with a chronic illness turn down one of two paths. They either become depressed and give up, saying that the holidays are overwhelming or they do what my daughter does and over-achieves, trying to make everything perfect, even though her body is not. I once told Chris she had an over-achiever's mind in an under-achiever's body.

So back to the proverbial Wall that so many hit after the holiday. Be kind to yourself- allow yourself the luxury of sleep, without guilt or fretting. Do all the things your mother used to remind you to do- drink lots of water, eat healthy food, take your vitamins, soak in a warm bath, put your feet up and most of all rest. For those with an illness, don't always think your cold or run down condition is from your illness, the healthy among you are dragging themselves around too.

Look What I Got!

Went to the "Family Christmas Party" yesterday. My sister bought me a present!!!!! I feel bad that I didn't have anything for her. I haven't felt much like shopping.... but she know's I love her just the same. Anyhoodles... you warm these up in the microwave (or freeze them)... It's winter so.... I warmed them! The wrap on the left side of the photo feels so good wrapped around my bladder front... and the little heart fits that painful spot in my lower back. The slippers make my toes all toasty! I think I like the wrap the MOST.... I heat it up and go to sleep with it warming me.... the heat lasts long enough to put me to sleep. Proceeds from her purchase go to support finding a cure for breast cancer. A worthy cause. I don't have cancer, I am so grateful!
Kaboodles Noodles!!! and Thank You to my sister who gave me one of the best nights I've had in months!

My Flare Monitoring

I plan to use the chart above to keep an accounting of my personal flares... and a possible reason for the flare?

Updates will be posted hopefully daily...depending on how I feel.

12/30/09 Overcast (Nerve Pain)
12/31/09 Overcast (Nerve Pain)
01/01/10 SNOW (loads of it!) (Red Lobster Lunch?)
01/02/10 Sleet (Mom to ER)
01/03/10 Sunday Day of Rest Partly Cloudy (Yeah!)
01/04/10 ANXIETY...1st day back. Showers
01/05-06/10 2 days of Sleet EXHAUSTED
01/11-10... Started out sleety... now it is SNOWING.... bad!!! I had a melt down in my closet. I am just so tired of all this. I just don't feel good, and I can't get relief for long enough to feel good. I want this to go away!!!! Today would be great!!!I can't seem to keep things organized anymore. I lose things. My clothes keep falling off the hangers and I don't pick them up and hang them back up. I am just so dang exhausted. Tonight I couldn't find anything to wear tomorrow. Earlier this school year I moved all of my clothes to the bottom 2 rods, put Dave's stuff on the top 2 rods. I just couldn't reach up that high any longer to look for clothes. So, tonight I was on my hands and knees, crying, trying to find something to wear tomorrow. EVERY THING I WEAR HURT..... But, that's another story for another day. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr........... Guess I'll go make a snowman! LOL

PainFull Bladder Disease IC

Having what seems like the beginning of a FLARE.... so I decided to digi scrap before I am in bed with the heating pad, pillows and a blanket over my head!
Scrapping is one of my favorite things to do... and often helps keep my mind off the pain.
I added GRATITUDE to my page, because as we all know... there are a lot of very bad diseases out there... I'm lucky I only have ONE.

DMSO Treatment @ Home

Several IC Friends have asked me if I do my own DMSO Treatments... so I decided to post about it. Leave a comment if you need me to clarify anything...

The BLUE Gloves... aren't mine. I just found this picture through a search and thought I would start out this post with it..... JUST FOR LAUGHS!!!! Hoping you found it as funny as I did!!!! Sorry if I scared you!

Directions for doing a "Treatment" at Home....
1. Lay out a clean towel.
2. Wash hands and put on gloves.
Assemble supplies on the towel:
3. Marcaine & Hepran, Syringe Needle (used to remove marcaine & hebran from their vile)
Sodium Cloride to Mix with the Marcaine & Hepran.
4. Cathetor
5. Lubrication Gel (I open the cathetor and lay it in the wrapper. I squirt some of this gel onto the tip of the cathetor that will be put into the urethra. This makes it less messy!)
6. 2 Cups - One cup to mix the Marcaine & Hepran in. One cup to catch the urine that will come out as the cathetor is inserted into the urethra.
7. Bladder Instillation Tool? (I call this the "Bladder Baster!" for FUN!)
Everything needs to be as steryl as possible.
Step by Step Directions for doing an Instillation
*** Empty your bladder FIRST****
1. Syringe the Marcaine, Hepran, and Sodium Cloride into one mixing cup.
2. Swirl to mix. (This is just 3/4 of an ounce)
3. Put the tip of the "Bladder Baster" into the Cup and pull the mixture into it.
4. Put a pea size amount of lidocaine onto the urethra. Wait about 60 seconds)
5. Insert the lubricated cathetor It only needs to go in about 1/4 to 1/2 the length of the cathetor- HAVE THE 2ND CUP READY to collect the urine that will drain from the bladder. Set the cup aside.
6. Attach the "Bladder Baster" filled with meds onto the cathetor.
7. Slowly push the medication mixture into the bladder through the cathetor.
8. Do NOT remove the "Bladder Baster"... holding the cathetor and the "Baster" all at once with a gentle and slow movement, pull the cathetor and "Baster" out.
YOU ARE DONE!
I rest for a while before I clean up! It seems like a lot of steps, but as you get "the hang of it" it will take you less and less time. It is actually quit exhausting at first, but don't give up!
A Word About Storage:
I have emptied a drawer in my dresser and that is where I store my supplies. I don't have little kids around... so if you DO... make sure where you store your supplies out of reach of small children. If I had young kids.... I would purchase a large make up bag and keep all my supplies in it.... and keep it way up high!!! This would be great to have if you ever needed to leave for longer than a week, and you needed to take your "treatment" with you.

Caring for Supplies:
I boil the collection and mixing cup and use them over and over again. I keep them in a clean gallon size baggie every time.
I boil the "Bladder Baster" and use it over and over again... keeping it steryal in a clean baggie everytime.
I boil the lidocane gel applicator and use it over and over again... keeping it steryal in the "Bladder Baster" baggie.
I use a new cathetor every time.
I also use a new syringe needle everytime.
I throw the viles away every time, as they are empty!

A Face Book Friend Messaged me the following information concerning DMSO Treatments. My URO calls this treatment: "Hepran Treatment."

Bladder Instillation
During a bladder instillation, also called a bladder wash or bath, the bladder is filled with a solution that is held for varying periods of time, averaging 10 to 15 minutes, before being emptied. My Uro askes me to hold this solution in for 1 hour, and no longer than 1 hour.

The only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for bladder instillation is dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, brand name Rimso-50). DMSO treatment involves guiding a narrow tube called a catheter up the urethra into the bladder. A measured amount of DMSO is passed through the catheter into the bladder, where it is retained for about 15 minutes before being expelled. Treatments are given every week or two for 6 to 8 weeks and repeated as needed. Most people who respond to DMSO notice improvement 3 or 4 weeks after the first 6- to 8-week cycle of treatments. Highly motivated patients who are willing to catheterize themselves may, after consultation with their doctor, be able to have DMSO treatments at home. Self-administration is less expensive and more convenient than going to the doctor’s office.

Doctors think DMSO works in several ways. Because it passes into the bladder wall, it may reach tissue more effectively to reduce inflammation and block pain. It may also prevent muscle contractions that cause pain, frequency, and urgency.

A bothersome but relatively insignificant side effect of DMSO treatments is a garlic-like taste and odor on the breath and skin that may last up to 7 hours after treatment
.
(Note: I have NEVER had this happen... I've asked people around me, and they haven't noticed any garlic-like odor... and they would notice because they don't like garlic!!!!) Long-term treatment has caused cataracts in animal studies, but this side effect has not appeared in humans. Blood tests, including a complete blood count and kidney and liver function tests, should be done about every 6 months.
